Jokowi Urges Extra Prison Monitoring to Avoid Breeding Radicals

Liputan6.com, Jakarta With the recently proliferating news suggesting the rampant widespread of Gafatar’s movement whose leader reportedly a former prisoner, Indonesian President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo necessitates extra vigilance and control over convicts in all prisons within Indonesian region.

He went to instruct Indonesian Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly to conduct this intensified operation on monitoring and invigilating prisoners more closely as worry over the susceptibility of prisons and correctional institutions to become the breeding grounds for radicals is becoming more apparent than ever.

“President Jokowi instructs Justice and Human Rights Minister to pay extra attention on prisons and correctional institutions so that they do not become the safe haven of radicals,” Indonesian Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung explained on Thursday 21 January 2016.

According to Pramono, radicalism expands not only through mouth-to-mouth but also in places where a group of people is isolated together. This is primarily why President Jokowi views extra vigilance as deemed necessary.

Apart from that, through Pramono President Jokowi requested for the Communication and Information Minister to verify and watch for websites with contents that are evidently radical.

“President Jokowi orders for webpages that spread misleading ideologies and signal a gesture of extremism to be shut down immediately,” Pramono concluded.

The website showed methods of countering intelligence and includes visions and missions of an extremist.
