Christmas in Papua: Indonesian Military Brings Santa to Conflict Region in Nduga

Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) are bringing gifts to the children of Papua.

Liputan6.com, Nduga - An Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) taskforce from Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad) were bringing Santa Claus and Christmas gifts to the children in the conflict region of Papua. The Mobile Yonif 411/Pandawa taskforce brought 200 gifts for the children.

This Christmas celebration was taking place in Nduga Regency, Highland Papua Province, which is affected by security conflicts.

The TNI taskforce said what they gave might be simple, but actually difficult to get in the region.

"We provided 200 Christmas gifts. The contents are simple stuff, from children's snacks, toys, bible, to daily needs, and others. Simple but to get them is very difficult particularly in this area of conflict," said the taskforce commander, Lt. Colonel Subandi on Monday (25/12/2023).

The soldiers were also seen wearing Santa costumes as they visited the churches to distribute the cadeaux. Indonesians use the term Sinterklaas for Santa.

Subandi said visiting the churches in Nduga actually could be risky.

"This is not an easy thing because security threats could come any time," he said.

The gifts are not only for the children, but also for the soldiers on the front line. They received meals such as donuts and crispy fried chickens which are impossible to find in the conflict area. The meals were specially delivered by a helicopter.

The post commander appreciated the gesture as a luxury.

"Very thankful to the commander. Truly luxurious meals," said the Post Commander, Infantry Captain Sudarso Pursito.

The local priest also showed his happiness for the gifts and prayed for the soldiers' safety.

Respect wa wa wa [thank you]. Amazing, thank you Commander 411. God bless. There are so many gifts for us all. Stay healthy for the children who are doing their duties in Nduga," said Priest Ishak Murib.
